The Malaya Study Group exists for collectors of the stamps, postal stationery and postal history of the states of Peninsular Malaysia which until 1963 formed the Federation of Malaya, including the Straits Settlements of Malacca, Penang and Singapore, the Federated Malay States, Negri Sembilan and Sungei Ujong, Pahang, Perak and Selangor and the Unfederated States, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Trengganu.The Society has a JOURNAL, "The Malayan Philatelist" and a NEWSLETTER supplied free to members, EXCHANGE PACKETS, AUCTIONS and has produced a number of significant PUBLICATIONS on the stamps and postal history of the area.

Golden Jubilee Programme in Malaysia 2009 


Members of the Malaya Study Group in Malaysia have a special programme to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Group.

The events will take place in Penang in a joint meeting with the Penang Philatelic Society (PSPP)

The Penang Philatelic Society (a.k.a. Persatuan Setem Pulau Pinang or PSPP) under the able leadership of MSG member Dr. Chua Hock Khoon will hold a joint PSPP/MSG event in 'The Pearl of the Orient' to celebrate the MSG Golden Jubilee.
There will be a philatelic exhibition entitled “Penang Heritage” in the Penang state museum located at Farquhar Street from 15th August 2009 till 10th September 2009. The official opening ceremony is on Saturday 15th August 2009 at 10.00 a.m. Invitation cards for the ceremony will be sent out by the Penang museum to Malaysian MSG members, but all MSG members who can make it are automatically invited. MSG members from the U.S.A. will be among those participating in the exhibition which will focus on Penang and Malacca material, in conjunction with the recent designation of George Town and Malacca town as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

There will also be a Stamp Fair running for three days from 15th to 17th August 2009.

The MSG celebratory dinner will be on Saturday 15th August 2009 and the MSG members’ displays will be on Sunday 16th August 2009.

Featured talks and displays on 16th August will include the following:

1. Japanese occupation: revenue, mail of India Independence League and Indian National Army

2. Malayan Emergency: Anti-communist Campaign, force's mail and detention camps

3. British Military Administration

4. Penang postal history including pre-war E & O mail and WWi censors


In addition to talks and displays by MSG members, Khoo Salma Nasution (the co-author of Penang Postcard Collection 1899 - 1930s) has agreed to give an additional talk on the Heritage of Penang.

The venue for the heritage talk on the morning of 16th August will be the Penang Teochew Association and the venue for the MSG talks and displays on the afternoon of 16th August will be the E & O Hotel, Penang. Mr. Peter Cockburn will open the members' displays with a welcome address and will be displaying some of his interesting BMA material.

  The good hotels within walking distance of the Penang state museum are the Bayview Hotel, Eastern & Oriental Hotel and Cititel. Help and advice are available for all transport and accommodation matters.

Admission to all events is free of charge for MSG members.
