Susan,
Please could you shed some light on stampless covers like this one?
I have several but know next to nothing about them.
Also 2 with red cross chops.

Thank you.

From the first cover ( now the one at the bottom ) can you post a scan of just the postmark from the top left, as large as possible - within the forum's limits. At this size it doesn't look Malayan ! I need to see it clearer to comment

Here is an interesting postcard I have acquired.

Looks like a lounge bar in a ship or ferry or oceanliner???

Comments?

By the way, are these items worth anything?

Thanks.

I have tried to get a copy of Ted Prouds Simplified Catalogue of the Japanese occupation stamps of malaya but have been unable to . Is it out of print? Where could I find a copy? iS it by Edward Wilfrid and published by Brighton Philatelic Co (1965)

thanks for posting:

1. the postmark, sorry this is NOT a Malayan postmark of Jap occ or any other time. :(

2. the postcard, yes it looks like a bar somewhere, very 1930s. :) The cancel looks OK at this distance as does the oval censor type chop, but the big red square mark is not known.

3. Ted Proud's 1965 book is replaced by a better book issued in 1992, Postal History of Malaya and North Borneo, see bibliography on this site for details. I have seen it offered on EBay recently so it is still available, and well worth having, to know what is good and what isn't. To save postage you could try ISC / Steven Tan in KL to see if they have a copy available, or James Song if you are in Singapore.

Susan, thank you for your comments and expert view.

Does that also mean that the other 2 stampless covers also are not malayan occupation cancellations? And if you dont mind, I will post more scans for your examination and opinion when you have the time.
Thanks for the direction on the publications and where I may find them.

I was lead to believe that the large red chop is called a penang SHU chop and it exists on some other covers as well.

Thank you for your time.

Hi
the scale of scans makes it difficult to check postmarks, but
until you get a book on postmarks, something worth knowing is the postal rates at the time:

Letter 8c, registration + 15c so registered letter was 23c.

Postcard 4c
Printed matter 2c.
Inflation was rampant so slight over franking was fairly common, 24c especially as a block of 4 ( the 6c overprints ) for 23c isn't really over franked.

50c is overfranked .

3c green, Dai Nippon Penang is a known stamp but not a valid rate so probably a philatelic franking.

Postage due was charged at twice the defficiency. So a letter should be 8c, franked 3c so defficiency 5c and the postage due should be 10c, not 9c, and they are usually cancelled with a postmark not a boxed T mark. most unusual, possibly OK, possibly not. I would need to check the boxed T mark, to see if it is known in Penang
