Does anyone have access to official documentation or descriptions of how mail was handled on the Federated Malay States Railways? This question has been generated by discussion of TRAIN MAIL cachets and the on-train posting boxes. Issues discussed include:
- When were boxes empties?
- Were the handstamps applied on the train or at destination?
- How many postal coaches and posting boxes were there (what and when)?

Genuine Train Mail cachets are always supported by a c.d.s. of the relevant place that they are associated with, e.g. Penang, K.L. etc. These are the usual type of cancellations and not a special type as far as can be said so this indicates that the mail was posted on the trains but then off loaded. The Train Mail cachets and the post office datestamps were then applied - we presume at the local G.P.O.

To put it another way, if a guard had the train mail cachet it might turn up with more than one datestamp of differing places but that doesn't happen.
