It looks like the Masjid Jamek at Jalan Tun Perak. That place is notoriously famous for flooding, the last occassion was just a few years ago. Masjid Jamek is a popular view on postcards. Those coconut trees in this postcard are no longer there. If there are other used cards of a similar picture to compare, the coconut trees could be a reference point to gauge the date.

I agree it is the Masjid Jamek at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. This was an area prone to repeated flooding and the best known was the disastrous flood of 5th May 1971 where the flood waters extended even to the nearby commercial buildings in Medan Pasar, which would be consistent with the partially submerged commercial buildings seen on the right of the picture. In my opinion, the most likely date (or thereabouts) for this postcard is 5th May 1971.

Following extensive drainage and widening works, flooding in this area is now largely a thing of the past and a modern picture of this area can be viewed in Wikipedia.

Hi Susan
Not sure (but as good an excuse to log on to the Forum as any!) but were there not very severe floods in central/ western part of the peninsula in 1924? That'd fit.
Regards
Dominic

Here's another card with the same mosque view taken from the angle at the confluence of Klang river and Gombak river, as explained by Dr Gong. As you can see, the water level is pretty high which explains the frequent flooding. This one's dated 1937. The coconut trees are still there. :D

Nothing philatelic in this reply but just, in passing, to say that when I was working in the KL branch of HSBC in 1964 floods happened quite often. As the Bank was alongside the river, just about where this view was taken, and we had a basement carpark, if the jaga saw the water level in the river starting to rise he would announce it in the bank and staff would be seen rushing to drive their cars off to higher ground.
