Greetings to all Board members and congratulations to the MSG on its 50th Anniversary. I recently purchased lots at the Spink Singapore auction and when I received the lots found that they were on their original album pages(written up). A quick enquiry to Spink and was told they were the original pages of Derek Clayton. Could anyone please shed some biographical information and collecting interests of Derek Clayton. Thank you in advance. Regards Tony.

Hi Tony,
Derek Clayton was a long standing and well known member of the Malaya Study Group, who edited the MSG Newsletter for many years. He gave many displays & contributed many articles to The Malayan Philatelist. He passed away some years ago.

Now for the commercial - if you get the CD of vols 1-48 of The Malayan Philatelist, you will be able to read his articles.

I imagine you will want to keep the items on his written up pages for the time being. His notes may be quite informative.

Best regards

Hi Tony,

glad to hear you have some of Derek's material. He died in 1994, but had sold his Singapore and Straits before that. Fortunately it was kept intact, and has now been sold on.

As '61Zephyr' says the TMP CDs will help you with his publications.

Derek colled Singapore and Straits, he had lived in Singapore ( 1950s ??) and revisited when he could. He had particular interest in Maritime and in TPOs and MPOs. He took photos on his travels, including some of TPOs. He was a member of the Singapore stamp club and some members there might remember him, as do many MSG members.

Perhaps we should a have a section for MSG Hall of Fame with photo and brief bibliograph, etc. It would be a shame when newcomers to our area of collecting have to inquire next who is Dr. F.E. Wood or Howard Seltzer.

A MSG version of the Dictionary of National Biography - an interesting Project.

I suggest we should limit it to those no longer living, a Who Was Who.
In the meantime I suggest the GIbbons Stamp Monthly 50th Anniversary edition's article about the history of the MSG - available on this site is a good place to start. It includes a photo of Dr Wood with Derek Clayton, John Rosevear and other early MSG members.
