Do stamp exhibits fire newcomers to the hobby to greater enthusiasm? A lot of collecting is about the acquisitive instinct, but a lot is about wanting to know more. Often people like to know more than their fellows, so they want to learn. Of course they have to share their knowledge, for any one to know they know more!

I wonder if the virtual disappearance of national exhibits in the UK has assisted the decline of interest in stamp collecting amongst new young collectors?

What is the experience in other parts of the world?

Gilfillian is partly right. There are exhibitions like Stampex, but they do not have exhibits, see my reviews on the Home Page.

The British Philatelic Exhibition will return to Stampex next year. For 2010, we are hoping to have a national series of events (about 25 in all) to try to get to the general public nationwide, not just the select few who go to Stampex in London.

It is great news that exhibits will return to Stampex in 2009, and the large number of events planned for 2010. Len has so rightly pointed out that philately needs to be available nationwide - Exhibits show what can be done, and I am sure, are part of the spring of inspiration which leads people to enjoy the hobby.

There are presently too many rules on exhibits. i.e. a multi-frame must at least have 5 frames, and in some shows 8 - 10. ALso, international exhibits frequently present customs declaration problems, plus insurance, etc. I have also experienced some rather ignorant judges assigned to judge an exhibit they lack expert knowledge in.

The Malaya study group is helping members to display at stampex february 2009, this is a good opportunity to try an exhibit even if you've not done it before. Just 1 frame, that is 16 sheets can't be that difficult can it ?

I am told that 11 entries from MSG members will be on display at Stampex in the one frame category. Perhaps nearer the time the details can be on the forum. :D

As there are only 62 entries in total, that is a pretty fair representation!

I guess that it will probably be so! Especially when the exhibits are very interesting to the newbies and those that get their attention.

But Exhibition must not be too difficult or prohibitive for new entrants. 1 frame exhibition will be a good way to let them have a taste of how it feels like and when they achieve some awards, it will definitely fire up their interest or enthusiasm to participate in 5 frame exhibitions :P !
